Zakat Questions

How much zakat do I pay?

Zakat is 2.5% (one fortieth) of your zakatable wealth, once it has stayed at or above the nisab for a full lunar year.

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due: the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it is lower, so more people pay and the poor benefit more.

What counts as zakatable wealth?

Cash and savings, gold and silver, shares and investments, business stock, and money owed to you that you expect to get back. Your home, car, furniture and personal belongings are not included.

Can I subtract debts?

Debts and bills that are due now can be subtracted. Scholars differ on long-term debts such as mortgages; many allow only the instalments due in the coming year.

This calculator follows the common rules. For shares, pensions, business assets or anything unusual, ask a scholar you trust.
