Mashallah Meaning and When to Say It

مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Mā shā’ Allāh

"What Allah has willed"

Mashallah means "What Allah has willed". Mashallah is said on seeing something good or admirable, attributing it to Allah instead of to the person or thing itself. It is also said as a guard against envy (the evil eye).

When to Say Mashallah

  • When praising someone's child, home, work or achievement.
  • When you admire something you have yourself.

Where It Comes From

And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, "What Allah willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allah"?
